Where does my help come from?

HELP

Where do you turn when deep inside you know there is a serious concern in your life? Let’s face it, you are worried sick! Perhaps you turn to the phone and call a friend. Maybe social media is your choice for help. Some reach for chocolate, Diet Coke, alcohol just to name a few. Are they truly able to help? Can they solve your problem?

WORRIED

One Sunday morning in July 1976, I attended church. It wasn’t my normal habit, but deep inside I was searching for help in a situation that I knew I couldn’t handle. I was definitely worried sick.

WHAT TO DO

The day before my daughter and I had visited a family friend. As she was playing, she fell in a sitting position and started screaming. We rushed home and I tried to comfort her. What could be the problem? What should I do? After church, I called our family physician, Dr. Bob Williamon, who met us at the emergency room in Demopolis. The decision was made to give her an enema.

PROBLEM

We went home and her situation had not improved. It was only getting worse. It occurred to me that her diaper had not been wet all day. Another call to the doctor and another trip to the ER. They inserted a Foley Catheter and the relief on that child’s face let us know we had found a problem. What caused the problem was yet unknown. I was still relying on the doctor to be lord and the solution to our problem.

EVALUATE

We were admitted to the hospital. A call was made Monday to the neurologist whose care we had been under for five months. He sent two interns on Tuesday to evaluate our daughter’s problem.

INTERNS

As my husband and I anxiously waited for a diagnosis, time went by so slowly. One intern seemed to take the lead and was exuding confidence in his ability as a doctor. He explained to us that in his opinion our daughter’s cyst at the end of her spine had blocked the nerves to her bladder and it would no longer function. When he finished talking, he walked out of the room. The second intern walked up to us and quietly said, “I don’t think that is the problem”. However, he didn’t know what the problem was.

RELIEF

On Wednesday, we transferred to Baptist Hospital in Montgomery to undergo tests and observation. On Friday, we were under the care of a surgeon who explained to us that he thought instead of a cyst, our daughter had a balloon like growth filled with fluid. Surgery was planned for Monday when he would remove the sac and she would be fine. We were thankful to receive such good news. The weekend was relaxed and easy. Then Monday came…

Shelter

Where do you seek your help? Do you seek help from people or things? In times of struggles and problems, our help comes from the Lord. Seek Him first. He truly is the only way to find shelter and peace in the midst of the storm.

About Paula Wallace

A child of God, wife, mother and grandmother of 6 precious children. I love art, nature and treasure my dear friends. Through the valleys and mountaintops, God led me to His saving grace at the age of 32. Since then the valleys and mountaintops have proven His love to me. I am learning to trust Him in all things. My prayer is that you, too, accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and trust Him. The Bible verse that I lean on mostly is Proverbs 3: 5-6 “ Trust in the Lord with all your heart. And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path.”NKJV Paula Wallace
