Mountains

Psalm 125:1-2 They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth forever.

2 As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth even forever.

Has the LORD ever “told you something” you have clung to with all your might; yet, circumstances repeatedly indicate to you this could not possibly happen? Yea, me too!

Many years ago, the LORD promised me something. I have clung to the promise and there is absolutely NO evidence this will ever happen. In fact, each day it seems less likely. So what is a girl supposed to do? The answer according to God’s Word is quite simple: TRUST THE LORD. Sounds simple. Reality proves it is difficult.

In Hebrew the word for trust is batach. To trust the LORD is betach el-Adonai. Batach is used 45 times in Psalms alone! Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to Trust the Lord with all thine heart and lean not to your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path and Proverbs 9:10 explains what it takes to understand! (We will see this next week)

What is trust? According to hebrew4christians.com it is an “attitude.” Let me just quote: “The attitude of trust refers to a self-consciously chosen inner disposition of the heart (lev or inmost self) that passionately depends upon the ability and grace of God to guide one in relation to the temporal sequences and connections of life. Trust involves the whole person and is manifest as an inner act of will that believes God for the future fulfillment of hope.”

Trust is faith. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 A deliberate decision to stand on what God said NO MATTER WHAT!

This is where the psalmist gets the analogy of standing like a mountain. Stately. Calm. Towering. Majestic. Permanent. Protecting. Immovable. “In the Old Testament, a mountain stands for Kingdom Authority.” (Adrian Rogers from The Incredible Power of Kingdom Authority)

What does my anxiety prove? It proves I do not trust completely. If I did, I would approach the “temporal sequences and connections of life” with a calm assurance my God will work it all out and what He promised WILL occur. Everything He promised in His Word has come true or is in the process of coming true. When I truly trust, I will walk in confidence, in peace, in assurance. I will set aside my own understanding and I will allow the LORD of glory to direct me. I may not see the complete fulfillment of His promise to me on this side of heaven but this does not mean He will not bring it to pass. HE promised and He will! This must be enough!

Instead of fretting over all I see, I must focus (a self-consciously chosen disposition of my heart) and cling to what I know: GOD IS ABLE and FAITHFUL. My family and friends would really appreciate it if I could get my act together and stop all the hand wringing, worrying, and heaven’s ears could use a rest from my incessant “prayers” that are in reality nothing more than a confession of unbelief–a leaning on my own very limited understanding of all God is accomplishing..

LORD Adonai,

Make me like a mount Zion. A faithful testimony of your faithfulness.

I ask for an extra measure of your grace and faith. (I Corinthians 12:7-10)

In Jesus name I pray.

About Yvonne Jones

I am at heart, a LIFEguard: "big" sister, mama, grandmother, aunt, friend, swimming coach, lifeguard trainer, and registered nurse. I am in the business of alleviating fear through education and lots of hand holding. As a swimming instructor, I have taught people of all ages to overcome fear of the water and I marvel as fear gives way to fearlessness, as panic turns to pure joy, as tears dissolve into giggles of glee, and pennies retrieved from the bottom of the abyss become trophies. As a nurse, I have been privileged to walk up to Heaven's gate as patients and family are welcomed home, witnessed the miracle of birth, helped mend broken hearts, and cared for the elderly as they wait. Scriptures number one admonition is "fear not." Question is HOW??? The Word becomes our swimming instructor and can help us learn to "tread water til Jesus comes." Something my students often thought I was going to make them do! So welcome to my pool! Jump in the cool water. Let it refresh your soul and feel the unseen hands of the Master Lifeguard lift you up and out of the deep water. Who knows, you just might even walk on water!

We would love to hear from you
