Gabriel’s Announcement

Gabriel is a busy angel.  He is once again on the move at the Lord’s command.  This time it is to a young teenage girl: A virgin from the tribe of Judah, the house of David, in the village of Nazareth.  Her name is Mary.  This warrior angel brings her the news that every young maid in Israel hopes will be hers:  She will be the mother of the Messiah.  The long-expected One.

Listen to the words said by this messenger to a child who has already entered into a covenant relationship with a man who at the time was preparing their room in his father’s house.  Already legally married in the eyes of the world but not yet consummated.  “Rejoice, highly favored one, the LORD is with you; blessed are you among women!  Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”

He then goes on to tell her, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS.  He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.  And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever and of His kingdom there will be no end.”  A miracle birth.  A name that means savior.  A great man.  A king.  A kingdom.  Ruler of all Israel–all 12 tribes. THE SON OF ALMIGHTY GOD!

Mary’s Response

Mary has questions!  Wouldn’t you?  How? Why me?  How am I going to explain this???

Gabriel answers with what she already knows:  “With God, NOTHING will be impossible!”

The questions we have also have the same answer.  With God, NOTHING is impossible.  Why can we not remember this?

Mary’s brave response to all the angel says is this:  “Let it be to me according to your word.”

No argument, no more questions, no stalling.  Just here I am.  Do as You wish LORD, my soul magnifies the LORD and my spirit has rejoiced in God, my Savior.  For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant.”
