Light of the World 3

Dawn

Jesus, LIght of the World, is our very life but He is also the proof of God’s Presence. Matthew the tax collector wrote, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!” Matthew 6:21-23 The Light of the World shines out of our lives giving evidence of His residence within our hearts.

Scripture from Genesis to Revelation speaks of light as proof of God’s Presence among us even after man gave up his former glory (light) as a result of sin. In the book of Exodus, Moses writes of how being in the Presence of God, while receiving the Ten Commandments, changed his countenance “to shining” so much so that others were afraid to even approach him and Moses was required to cover his face. (Exodus 34:29-35) God’s Presence among the Jews was seen as a pillar of fire at night and a cloud by day as a guide. (Exodus 13:21) Jesus appearance changed before Peter, James, and John on the mountain as HIs face like Moses was shining and His clothes became white as LIGHT! (Matthew 17:1-2) The Shekinah glory was again wrapped around them. II Samuel 22:29 sums it up: “For YOU are my lamp, O LORD; And the LORD illumines my darkness.”

Lamp unto my feet

In John 8:12 Jesus says He is the “Light of the World” and if we follow HIm we too will have the “Light of life,” for “His Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105) He reminds His followers that as long as He is in the world He is the Light of the World,” implying when He leaves we are to reflect the Light, (John 9:5) because we are the “light of the world.” His instructions were to not hide our light but to let it shine through good deeds to our fellow man. (Matthew 5:14-16)

What are the deeds we are to do? Jesus told His disciples how to be lights in the dark in the BE ATTITUDES we find in Matthew 5:1-11. Our deeds alone will be judged by the fire light of God and whatever is not of God will be destroyed as if it were wood, hay, or stubble. (I Corinthians 3:12-13) The same light that illuminates, destroys wickedness and wrong motives. The goal of the Light is the same: God wants to draw us close.

The time is soon coming when Jesus will be the Light of the World once more. He will be according to Isaiah the Light of Israel, (Isaiah 10:17) and the Light to the Gentiles (nations). (Isaiah 42:6) John the Revelator wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the New Jerusalem will be the city in no “need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof,” and “there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.” (Isaiah 60:19-20; Revelation 21:23 and 22:5)

For those who have trusted Christ as Savior and Lord, we shall be dressed as a bride and given “robes of white” made of “pure and shining” linen. (Revelation 19:7-8)

The question we must ask ourselves: Is Jesus the LIght of my World? King David answered this question affirmatively this way: “The LORD is my LIGHT and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

Light keeps us from hiding! (Jeremiah 23:24)

Light breaks the darkness!(Genesis 1:1-4)

Because, “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.” (Isaiah 9:2)

Have a Blessed Christmas! Bask in the LIGHT!

About Yvonne Jones

I am at heart, a LIFEguard: "big" sister, mama, grandmother, aunt, friend, swimming coach, lifeguard trainer, and registered nurse. I am in the business of alleviating fear through education and lots of hand holding. As a swimming instructor, I have taught people of all ages to overcome fear of the water and I marvel as fear gives way to fearlessness, as panic turns to pure joy, as tears dissolve into giggles of glee, and pennies retrieved from the bottom of the abyss become trophies. As a nurse, I have been privileged to walk up to Heaven's gate as patients and family are welcomed home, witnessed the miracle of birth, helped mend broken hearts, and cared for the elderly as they wait. Scriptures number one admonition is "fear not." Question is HOW??? The Word becomes our swimming instructor and can help us learn to "tread water til Jesus comes." Something my students often thought I was going to make them do! So welcome to my pool! Jump in the cool water. Let it refresh your soul and feel the unseen hands of the Master Lifeguard lift you up and out of the deep water. Who knows, you just might even walk on water!
