Listening- Promptings and divine appointments

Listening for God’s Voice.

God is continually speaking to His people. We have looked at hearing Him through scriptures, desires, and by open doors. God oftentimes speaks to us in promptings and divine appointments. Divine appointments are similar to watching for God to open doors.

Prompting and divine appointments can have tremendous impact in our lives and in others lives.

“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. “Isaiah 30:21 (ESV)

Jeremiah 33:3 “Call to me and I will answer you, rand will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”

I want to begin by saying I have never heard God speak to me in an audible voice.

God speaks through His Word. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26

The key to hearing God’s voice is through relationship.

“Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” John 8:47

We, as believers, are to “train our senses to discern what is good and what is evil.” Hebrews 5:14.

Sometimes we may have an unexplainable feeling that we should call someone or visit someone. It may be an urgency to pray for a loved one.

These are what should prompt us to action. We may find out why later but many times we never know. “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. “Isaiah 30:21 (ESV)

God’s Word says over and over to be led by the Holy Spirit. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27 Following the Holy Spirit is knowing what is in the Word and doing it.

“And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you.” Mark 4:24 (ESV)

As we begin to follow these promptings, God will begin to set up times, places and people that cross our paths. These divine appointments are opportunities to minister the message of the love of God to others. These appointments mess up our schedules and they require us to reach out in ways that are out of our comfort zones.

How can we know it is God’s prompting?

Things to remember:

*God will never ask you to do something that is contrary to His Word in scripture.

*God wants to have an intimate relationship with his children. Intimate relationships are build on communication and fellowship.

*He wants us to call on Him. He will answer and tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.

There are three voices we can hear in our mind, soul or spirit.

  1. Our own voice. It is self-centered and can be deceiving.
  2. Satan’s voice. “He comes to steal, kill and destroy you and me!” Remember Satan can transform into an angel of light.
  3. God’s voice: He will NEVER contradict scripture.

Jeremiah 33:3 “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”

Pray for God to enter your life in a real way. Read his Word. Study His ways. Listen for His quiet leading.
