The Pleasure of God

What brings you pleasure?

Maybe it is sand in your toes!

Maybe it is a relaxing mountain view!

Smoky Mountains

Maybe it is spending time with family and friends!

Sister and brother-in-law being themselves!

Maybe it is that hobby you can’t wait to get to! Golf, swimming, sewing, reading, walking in a local park.

Love a walk in the park

Pleasure- is defined as “a feeling of happy satisfaction and enjoyment.”

It is that place your soul and spirit feel at home!  The  “Awww” feeling.

Now, I want you to think for a moment…. Where would that “feeling of happy satisfaction and enjoyment” be in God.   If we are made in the image of God and we are (Genesis 1:27, 2:7), our creator God has feelings of “happy satisfaction and enjoyment” in exponentially larger measure.

As Christians, those who have given their lives to follow Him,we have an unquenchable thirst to know Him more.   2 Corinthians 3:18 says, “We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another.”

So what brings God pleasure, satisfaction and joy?

Zephaniah 3:17 “The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will be quiet in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

What is it that gives Him such satisfaction and pleasure that it makes God Sing Loud?

God delights in:

  1. Seeing His children read His Word, His love letter to us. www.fathersloveletter.com/text.html   This letter has been around for a long time but I love reading it to reassure me of the scriptures that tell me how much God loves me! These are verses from The Holy Word of God.  God loves His children to read His Word.
  2. Seeing His children worship.  Psalm 122:1; Hebrews 10:25
  3. Doing good for us.  Philippians 4:19 supplies all our needs, Romans 8:32, “freely give us all things” Matthew 7: 11,”if you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!”
  4. Seeing His children live in harmony and peace. Romans 12:16,18; Psalm 133:1, 1 Corinthians 7:15.

Philippians 2:13 “ For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” God takes great pleasure in seeing His children growing to be more Christlike.

God is most satisfied, has the greatest pleasure, rejoices most when His children “hope in his steadfast love.”

Psalm 18:19, “He brought me forth into a large place, he delivered me, because He delights in me.”  Do you want to know how much God takes pleasure in doing for you.  Read the entire chapter of Psalm 18:19 today and meditate on it.

What is the object of your pleasure? What brings you delight?

“The worth and excellency of a soul is to be measured by the object of its’ love”   Henry Scougal  quote from The Life of God in the Soul of Man, (circa,1677)

It just might be that we have sickness of soul, depression, anxiety, fear because we have tried other things to bring us delight, satisfaction and joy when Jesus gives us all that we truly need to have peace, love, joy, and thanksgiving.

God delights in every detail of our life.  He longs for us to be satisfied in Him.

Psalm 37:23 New Living Translation (NLT) “The Lord directs the steps of the godly.  He delights in every detail of their lives.”

“What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love–behold and embrace–the great, glorious sovereign, happy God of the Bible.”  John Piper,  The Pleasures of God.
