Fear the Lord Your God Recap

psalm91-4

Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you
from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
   nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
   nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
   ten thousand at your right hand,
   but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
   and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
   no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
   to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
   so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
   you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
   I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
   I will be with him in trouble,
   I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
   and show him my salvation.”

El Elyon by Gwen Smith

Matthew Henry calls this psalm the “writ of protection,” and believes it was written by King David.  Some scholars believe it was written by Moses as an answer to the 90th Psalm.
El Elyon is the GOD Most High in Verse one and El Shaddai is the LORD Almighty, Jehovah  is my God, and Adonai  is the LORD in verse two.  Four names of God, four parts of His character revealed.  This is our God.
Verse 1-2 is the state of the godly
Verse 3-8 speaks of the safety of the godly
Verse three is a confession or agreement with God. This verse is repeated in Psalm 124:7 and Psalm 124:8  speaks of the NAME OF THE LORD who made heaven and earth.
Verse 4 is an analogy of protection seen in the mother bird over her nest. (Isaiah 26:3 Matt 27:37)
Verses 9-10 speaks of our habitation
Verses 11-13 protection of His servants
Verses 14-16 speaks of our friendship with God and its effects
We dwell (sit down) in heavenly places
We abide (at home)
We have a refuge (we are behind the veil)
We are protected by His fortress and angels so that we do not even stump our toes)
Re-read verses 9-16 and see the cause and effect.
When man makes The Lord his habitation/refuge
God promises:
No evil
No plague
Deliverance
Angels watching over

When Man sets his love upon God:  God Sets man on high

When Man knows His Name :  Answers Will be with us in trouble

Honor :   Give long life  Show salvation
When Man trusts the Lord:    Deliverance from pestilence  &  snare
Truth will be a shield
NO FEAR:  Not face judgement

So, to be sure we really let this sink into our souls let me say it one more way:  When I (you) trust in the LORD and in the power of His name,  the LORD will deliver and set you on high (honor), He will cover you with His very own feathers/wings;  He will eliminate fear during the day and during the night, during attack, during illness, during times of oppression and loss; He will give spiritual insight, answer me when I call, give long life, show us His salvation,  and no evil can come near!

We “fear the LORD” and he removes all the other fears.  We have been granted entrance into the Holy of Holies  as we follow our High Priest (Jesus) into the Father’s throne room.  This is the picture of companionship.  This is His Salvation.

14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
   I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
   I will be with him in trouble,
   I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
   and show him my salvation.”
Oh sister (and brother), please let this sink deep into our collective souls.  You are cherished by God Almighty (El Shaddai)  the God Most High (El Elyon)!!  Meditate on this today.

I pray that the fear nots have spoken to your heart and oh that you could understand the fear of the Lord your God is where peace, courage, and trust is found.  This is the ONLY fear you need to have.  You have been handed His “writ of protection” signed in the blood of Jesus.  Whoever wrote this Psalm is not of importance.  What is important is that I take it as my very own.  Re read this Psalm and everywhere you see a personal pronoun insert your NAME!  Make it YOUR writ of protection.

El Shaddai by Michael Card
We have come to the end of this study.
Father in Heaven, how I thank you for this time spent in your Word.  What wonderful gold nuggets we have mined.   How rich we truly are.  Our hearts need not fear what man or this world can do to us for if you are for me who can be against me? (Romans 8:31) No not one!  I thank you in Jesus precious name.  Amen.

About Yvonne Jones

I am at heart, a LIFEguard: "big" sister, mama, grandmother, aunt, friend, swimming coach, lifeguard trainer, and registered nurse. I am in the business of alleviating fear through education and lots of hand holding. As a swimming instructor, I have taught people of all ages to overcome fear of the water and I marvel as fear gives way to fearlessness, as panic turns to pure joy, as tears dissolve into giggles of glee, and pennies retrieved from the bottom of the abyss become trophies. As a nurse, I have been privileged to walk up to Heaven's gate as patients and family are welcomed home, witnessed the miracle of birth, helped mend broken hearts, and cared for the elderly as they wait. Scriptures number one admonition is "fear not." Question is HOW??? The Word becomes our swimming instructor and can help us learn to "tread water til Jesus comes." Something my students often thought I was going to make them do! So welcome to my pool! Jump in the cool water. Let it refresh your soul and feel the unseen hands of the Master Lifeguard lift you up and out of the deep water. Who knows, you just might even walk on water!
