Sitting at Jesus’ Feet

At-Jesus-Feet

For a few weeks now,  the Lord has been speaking to my heart these instructions:
      “Be still and know Me,
      Sit at My feet,
      Seek My face,  and
      Soar with Me.”

Our example for sitting at Jesus’ feet” comes from Luke 10:38-42.

“Two Sisters!!” Martha and Mary lived in Bethany and had a brother named Lazarus.  Their home was a place that Jesus was always welcomed to come and visit; in other words, an “open door” to the Master.

“Two choices!!”  Martha was busy with the responsibilities of caring for the guest, which is not a bad thing but something someone must do.  She complained to Jesus about all the work of serving being upon her shoulders and asked Him to encourage Mary to help her with the work.

His words to her were, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but, only one thing is needed.  Mary had chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

What was “this most needful thing?“

Mary chose to sit at Jesus’s feet,“  giving Him her full attention, giving Him first place, letting Him be a priority in her life.  She had come to Jesus with open ears to hear His precious words and to learn how to let them give her guidance for her everyday life.

One of my childhood memories comes to mind.  At times one of our laying hens would began to act different; she would start staying on the nests.  This was what they called becoming “broody.” (I only learned that word recently.)  That mama hen was ready to sit on her fertilized eggs and hatch out a bunch of baby chicks.

From the time that she would start sitting on those eggs until hatching time, her full attention and purpose was to keep them warm, turning them as needed, and protecting them from any outside interference. The incubation period took 21 days for the baby chicks to develop.

The work that God does in our lives takes time for Him to develop Jesus in us.  It does not happen overnight.  Time at His feet”  must be the most “Needful Thing” in our lives also.  Let us choose the better thing like Mary did.

Blessed is the man / woman that hears Me,  watching daily at My gates,  waiting at the posts of My doors.   For whoso finds Me finds life and obtains favor of the Lord.  (Proverbs 8:34-35)

Mary’s position of “sitting at Jesus’ feet” revealed her deep love and devotion, her humble submitted heart,  and her desire to learn at her Master’s feet.  The words of life that Jesus would speak to her would transform her life forever.

The degree that you and I choose to sit at our Lord’s feet, to learn of Him and all He longs to reveal to us is the degree that God’s spiritual fruit will be produced out of our lives.

And these are they which are sown on good ground;  such as hear the word,  and receive it,  and bring forth fruit,  some thirtyfold, some sixty,  and some an hundred.  (Mk. 4:20)
