1 Samuel 9:7   And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely show kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father (grandfather); and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.   (KJV)

King David now reigns, but his friend Jonathan is dead.  Our battles have casualties, leaving us broken-hearted, without loved ones, loyal comrades, and forever changed.  David longs for a connection to Jonathan and puts out an appeal:  “Is there anyone left in Jonathan’s household still living anywhere in my kingdom?”  This ancient version of Facebook/Twitter turns up a son of Jonathan; Mephibosheth, who was orphaned at age five and a special needs child, unable to walk.  His name means exterminator of shame.

David sends for this “unfortunate” son of Jonathan.  Mephibosheth is brought to the palace for unknown reasons.  No wonder he is fearful.  He has been summoned by the warrior king.  He is the grandson of Saul who tried to “exterminate” David, and he cannot walk much less run for his life!

When David sees Mephibosheth’s countenance (a reflection of Jonathan), compassion fills the king’s heart.  To the utter surprise of this encumbered one, his life takes a dramatic turn: poverty to prosperity, dependence to independence, hovel to palace, hungry to filled, alone to favored companion.

God the Father tell us, the handicapped ones, the same thing: because of Jesus, I will show you great kindness, I will restore all you have lost, and you will eat at my table.  It is NOT because of who you are but for Jesus’ sake — it is He who wants you to share our home, our land, our table, and our reign.

We don’t have to fear.  It is not about what we have done or who we are; it is about who we know–JESUS!
